Cranberry Goodness
Many women drink cranberry juice to help maintain a healthy urinary tract. Cranberries contain active compounds that actually reduce the harmful bacteria that like to stick to the bladder walls and cause havoc.
In one study it was found that drinking one pint of sugar-free cranberry juice a day resolved 73% of UTIs (urinary tract infections) in 44 females and 16 males. Urinary infection in men is quite rare and may indicate a prostate condition.
When cranberry juice was stopped 61% of the participants experienced a recurrence of the infection. In these busy times, its not always practical to drink optimum amounts of cranberry drink. The good news is that cranberry can be taken conveniently as a supplement in capsule form.
Probiotics may also be helpful in addressing UTIs. L acidophilus is a natural probiotic found in the gastrointestinal tract and in fermented foods such as yoghurt.
It promotes friendly bacteria and health of the urinary tract and intestines.
