KEY WORDS TO FITNESS
CV (CARDIOVASCULAR)
Exercise which works the heart and lungs, eg: bike, rowing or running.
AEROBIC
Aerobic means “with oxygen”. Aerobic exercise is any exercise where sufficient oxygen can be breathed in to supply all the relevant muscles and allow them to continue working.
ANAEROBIC
Anaerobic means “without oxygen”. Anaerobic exercise is high intensity work where energy is needed faster than oxygen can provide. Stored energy from the muscles are used, but as these stores are limited the muscles will tire and need time to recover. Examples of anaerobic exercise are sprinting and lifting heavy weights.
WARM-UP
Low intensity aerobic exercise, which should be done before every workout. The aim of the warm up is to warm muscles, ligaments and tendons to avoid injury. It also increases blood supply to the relevant areas to give you a more effective workout.
COOL-DOWN
Low intensity aerobic exercise followed by stretching should be done after any workout. The aim is to return the circulation of blood to normal, and to clear the muscles of bi-products such as lactic acid, which will cause stiffness and soreness.
INTENSITY
How hard you are working yourself.
FREQUENCY
How often you do exercise per week.
TRAINING ZONE
These are the bands you work within to achieve certain goals.
- Warm-Up Zone.
- Aerobic Zone.
- Anaerobic Zone.
REPS
Repetitions, ie: how many times you lift a weight.
SETS
A group of reps.
RESISTANCE
Where the weight is pushing in the opposite direction to you, for example.
